The Tides Have Changed
Our last article highlighted how well the Canucks were playing and how it seemed they were on the verge of taking the next step to being a playoff team. Well Juddy was not fooled. In several moves he traded away star defender Lindholm and winger Brodzinski for a slew of picks and prospects that was centered around center Veleno. Since these trades we see Vancouver slip lower in the standings and again rest at the last place team. Saari, Romanov, Wilde, and Skjei is a very good top 4 for the future in Vancouver and may have thought that they did not need Lindholm and decided to get some assets for him. The return for him was very good getting Veleno, and two former first round prospects in Ruutu and Sillinger. Over the past few seasons Juddy has gone “all in” trading away picks and prospects to get the team over the hump, it has not worked leaving the teams farm system utterly depleted. This was a necessary move and will help the Canucks in the long run. The Brodzinski trade brought back a return of Crnkovic, CHI 1st, and Suchachek. Again it seems like after the Lindholm move was made, this season was thrown away and the need for more assets is helped here.
well see if these moves help the future of Vancouver or the further down the wormhole they go becoming the Cleveland Browns of the PTPHL.

Another end to a season
As we look back at another end of a disappointing season for the Vancouver Canucks, we see a team who went after the #1 pick and emphasized building up their farm team and developing their prospects. Romanov made huge strides becoming a true #1 for the blue line, we also saw Saari become a really good player down in Utica. The sense is he will start next season in Utica before making the jump to the Canucks early on in the next season. The Canucks also brought in Sillinger and Suchachek in different trades and will likely give them both the chance to grow in a Canucks uniform to start next year.
The biggest lose of the year came last night as the draft lottery was announce. The Canucks has the 2nd best odds for the 1st overall pick and wound up with the #3 pick. “This changes our strategy a bit, we continue to evaluate the draft but we are also monitoring the trade market.” Says GM Juddy. This is interesting as the team is not ready to turkey compete yet but not getting the coveted #1 pick changes their outlook. We’ll see in the weeks to come how they approach the draft and trade market.

The first round of the playoffs is over and we still see no movement of players or pick from Vancouver. There was a report a few days ago of the Flyers shopping around Jonathan Toews, and it is believed Vancouver made the call to Joe about what it would take to get him back in Vancouver. The talks have not progressed much and it seems that might’ve been a dead end. The Canucks have also reached out to the Capitals and Bruins about moving up in the draft or what it would take to acquire their picks outright, Washington GMs literally laughed Juddy off of the phone, and we have yet to hear how the talks with the Bruins are going. It is said Juddy has also inquired about the price tag on Janko Stephan as well as the #2 pick from Boston but new Boston GM Diglett isn’t keen on trading Stephan.
It seems the best route for the Canucks and GM Juddy is to stay the course, try to draft a difference maker on forward and build up this team through the draft and through developing their own guys. With 3 picks in the first round they could easily get some good players to turn this franchise in the right direction.

Trade in Vancouver
A few days before the draft the Vancouver Canucks completes a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Vancouver sends over Cody Glass to Toronto a long with cash for the 12th pick in this draft as well as a 2nd this year and a 3rd next year.
“Our final draft evaluations have come in and we are very pleased with how deep this draft can be, there are several players we are targeting and now we have a better chance to get them. “ said GM Juddy
The rebuild continues in Vancouver and if they stick to it this team can be fully loaded in a few years.

Draft has unofficially began
The draft is set to go live on Friday, but teams are able to start making their picks right away. Washington had the #1 overal pick and it was no surprise they selected the talented forward Zatko out of the Czech Republic. With the second pick the Bruins selected the Canadian forward/defender Mitchell. With Vancouver up next Juddy had a big decision to make, does he trade the pick, select a forward or trade a guy like Saari for an impact forward and select Petrovin. After much reported internal debate they selected the Russian forward Novak. The Canucks needed a goto guy on offense and they got one n Novak, he is NHL ready and projects to have amazing offensive skills and can skate like the wind. Rounding out the top 5 the Sharks took Petrovin and the Rangers selected Jaspers.
In other news, after trading for the 12th pick in the draft the Canucks made another move. They moved the 12th pick and Sillinger for the 8th pick. It is believed they are targeting a specific player and think he may be available at 8. They have also been in talks with the Dallas Stars about moving up yet again from 8 to 6. The Canucks have also been linked, again, to Toews. The talented two way center just came off another Stanley Cup win and the Flyers May not have the room for him. He could be a good piece to help the growth of Novak and other young pieces in the line up.

Draft Wrap Up
The Vancouver Canucks made 4 first round drsft picks selecting Alexjei Novak, Alex Lundqvist, Nikolai Yasakov, and Samuel Malenfant. Novak is poised to be an elite offensive player, although there are questions about his consistency, but he is seen to be able to over come that. Lundqvist looks to be a really good power forward, and with a6’5” frame we’ll see him being a good player in this league for years to come. Yasakov was the #1 ranked goalie in the draft, Vancouver expects him to be their #1 goalie for many years. Last but not least Is Malenfant, he looks to be a real good offense player, he was the best player available. Vancouver was moments away from trading the pick for Jonathan Toews from Philadelphia, but after seeing the players left GM Joe decided it was best to keep Toews.
