How Good Can This Canucks Team Be?
There is only a small sample size, 12 games to be exact, but Vancouver currently has the most points in the league, with a 9-2-1 record for 19 points. This team made a few offseason moves to shake up their roster, trading away guys like Cozens, Jacobs, McHawkeyface, and Gurianov. While adding Schenn, Orlov, and Doan via trade and Dove-McFalls via UFA. They also added a few draft picks with these trades but they look to be late 1st rounders. The team was not satisfied with its finish last year, a first round 5 game loss to the SanJose Sharks. The Sharks are a great team but the management thought the Canucks could and should make a deep playoff run.
Now what do these moves mean for the Canucks going forward? Elk they are clearly in win now mode. Schenn is 37 and retiring this year, Ristolainen is 34, Carlo is 32, Toffoli is 36, and Dove-McFalls is 31. They do have some talented younger players under 25 like Romanov, Novak, Ram, Dyment, and starting goalie Yasakov, but they lack prospect depth and quality picks in the future. They need to make this year or next year a deep playoff run the hopefully leads to a Cup. The have a few picks they could dangle out there to help deepen their roster, but right now the feeling is that they like their chemistry and will see how far this current team can make it.

Yasakov Shows How Good He is
In 20 games this year Vancouver boasts a 12-6-2 record for 26 points. That is a narrow lead on the division and tied for second overall in the league. But over th past two weeks the team has struggled a bit going 3-4-1. What’s the difference? The start goalie. Yasakov started the first 12 games going 8-2-2 while Korpisalo has started during the 3-4-1 stretch. Yasakov has a 2.30 GAA and 88.2 save %. Now those number don’t jump off the paper, he does enough to win. That could be the team playing better in front of him or just had a bad stretch with Korpisalo in net. Yasakov has a great season last year for a team that underperformed and then Korpisalo was brought in at the end of the year to back up Yasakov because their back up wasn’t pulling his weight. In a small sample size Korpisalo played great and had a 0.92 GAA in 8 games played at the tail end of the season.
This season has been a different story, and the team has played much better in front of Yasakov, and Yasakov has been able to find a way to win games. They’ll need to find a balance going forward if they want to keep pace and win the 1 seed in the Western Conference.
