Another Top 5 pick?
After what seemed to be a promising start to the season, the Vancouver Canucks are again bottom dwellers of the league. The currently sit 2nd to last overal with only 17 points. Even though the team as a whole is under performing there are some bring spots.
Demko has looked great in net all year. Wilde and Joulevi are showing they are NHL ready and still improving their game every night. New studs Point and Jones have both been playing really well in their new roles, and we can’t forget about #1 pick Jack Hughes showing he is the real deal with his improvements every day. In 26 games for Utica he has put up 38 points (11 goals and 27 assists) showing us that playing at the next level is nothing new for this kid and when he’s ready to make his debut in Vancouver it’ll be more of the same. DiPietro has also looked real well in Utica, although the team doesn’tt have a winning record he has played well and has put up good numbers in net.
We would have to say yes we expected way more from this team, but with this young core, and a couple good veterans the future is still bright in Vancouver and things will pick up sooner than later.

Vancouver goes 2-1 in the last week showing improvements on all fronts. If they can keep up this pace they will avoid the bottom of the league, but do they want that? At this point is it better to win or to win another top 5 pick? Either way they add another top talent young player or they can turn that pick into a trade chip to help improve their team. They need a lot of improvements but they still seem a ways away to actually competing. It’ll be an interesting few months to see what they do and how they approach the future.

With Vancouver sitting 15 points out of a playoff spot we bring up the question, will they push to compete or become sellers and trade away their vets for picks? They were rumored to be in on Malkin and Seguin but ultimately lost out on acquiring both of them. They have also been in on acquiring Toews from Chicago. They are said to have packaged a very strong offer that does not include Pettersson, Hughes, or any of their elite prospects. If they can pull off a deal for Toews that will immediately add to the win column, giving them a franchise player in their top 6. There will likely be corresponding moves with a Toews deal because their top 6 becomes a bit crowded, and they also want to save room for Hughes when he is ready to make he jump. The two I would think are likely out are Yamamoto and Pettersson. The two of them are very good players but it would make he lost sense to move them. No deal has been out their for either so pure speculation here, but it would seem they need help on the blue line and that’s where they’ll use these two to upgrade their defense. With a lot of the contenders already selling off their young pieces for Kessel, Malkin, Seguin, and Ninerietor it looks as if the best batch of prospects and picks are still in Vancouver and could help them come trade deadline day.

Juddy strikes again! This offseason the mindset in Vancouver was that the team was going to start its turnaround. Have a pretty good year maybe just miss the playoffs but start building a real competitive team. Well.....that fell short. Vancouver hovered around the bottom 5 of the league and GM Juddy wasn’t going to let that continue. After going for Malkin and Seguin and missing on both, he was determined to add another top end talent. Chicago’s intern GM Joe was shopping around all veteran players, and That’s when Juddy pounced. He made an offer of VAN 1st this year and Antropov with Greene being a salary dump. Joe liked this deal but wasn’t going to make a deal because he liked it he was looking for a deal he loved and that he couldn’t pass up on. Juddy then added another prospect Xavier Bouchard. That put the deal over the top and was announced moments later.
“Losing Antropov, Bouchard, and the 1st hurts but with so much youth in our system and only being able to develop so many at a time our window wouldn’t come up for a few years. This move puts us in contention to start winning now. We have some great veterans mixed in with great youth and I can’t wait to see how everyone feels together.” Said Juddy at the press conference.
This move give Vancouver 2 good scoring lines, with Hughes still coming up soon as well. This team will be a threat in the West starting now.

Jack Hughes has finally made his long awaited debut for the Vancouver Canucks. Spending most of the year in the AHL with Utica, Hughes put up 106 points in just 64 games. Showing that his game could keep up with the higher talent. In just 5 games with Vancouver Hughes has 3 goals and 1 assist and is also a +5. The team had high hopes for Hughes and this is a small sample size but he is showing he can compete and be an elite player in this league. John Beecher will be the next young guy to make the leap from AHL to Vancouver and that could come following the trade deadline.
Other news in Vancouver, a big deal is about to be announce between the New York Islanders and Vancouver. Looking to improve their defense it is believed Vancouver is acquiring Dougie Hamilton. They currently sit 7 points outside of a playoff spot and adding Dougie can help vault them into the 7/8 spot. This would be a great stepping stone for this young team and would help with their expierence going into next year, where they seem to be a legit cup contender.

Was this season a disappointing season for the Canucks or is this what was expected? Last offseason GM Juddy made a huge splash trading for Seth Jones and Brayden Point, and came out declaring this would be the year the Canucks get back to the playoffs, we’ll with 4 games left the Canucks have 0% chance of making the playoffs. The team could never get properly, in season additions of Dougie Hamilton and Jonathan Toews, as well as call ups Jack Hughes and John Beecher, kept this line up from really getting stability. With some a few re signings to do it would seem like Juddy would have a rather quiet offseason. The one need would be to upgrade their 6th defensemen and that should be an easy task once free agency opens up. With a lot of star power on this team along with some future greats, if they don’t make the playoffs next season, the coach, and the GM could be looking for new jobs.
