Zach Werenski has narrowed his team list down to 4 teams with a dark horse 5th team. The Colorado Avalanche, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Columbus Blue Jackets. Each team has made a competitive offer, and has a lot of upside to them.
Pittsburgh made a huge rebuild with 4 top 10 picks this past draft and other players in the first round. They also have a few good pieces on their roster and plenty of cap space to help bolster their line up. While they aren’t winning a championship next year the near future looks bright in Pittsburgh and Werenski will help put them over the top.
Buffalo made a huge push at the end of last season and just missed the playoffs, they have the top 2 picks from last years draft as well as stand out defenders in Heiskanen and Chyaka. They also have good role players in their bottom 6 and plenty of cap space to add to their top 6 forwards. With Werenski they are one of the contenders to make a deep playoff run.
Colorado has been in a rebuild for a few seasons and has quietly put together a good young team. There defense is young and could use the veteran leadership in Weresnki to put them over the top. They also have some cap space to help add to their team to bolster the lineup and put a playoff team on the ice next season.
Columbus is the team that draft Zach, and where he has played his whole career. He has loved his time in Columbus and had hoped to retire there, but with the vacant GM spot he is unsure if this is the right place to win a cup. They still have a good team and with a little love can be a good team in this league.
The dark horse team is the Washington Capital, they have expressed interest but can’t offer the dollar value Werenski feels he is worth. They have been working the phones to try to free up the proper space needed to make a run at his services. Washington is a cup favorite and has been the past few years, and Zach will put them over the top. He would be stupid not to think about the chance to win a cup in the next season or two and maybe win a couple.
I will be talking to each GM and requesting final offers, he will make his decision with in the next 24 hours.
