With the recent buzz about player movement lately, I feel like I can help shed light on the PTPHL economy of player values here, a topic I keep a very close eye on. As the former PA for Defensemen, I feel like I can help here more.
Maybe I'm biased but I believe in PTPHL defenders are the most valuable pieces. By valuable I don't mean it will make or break your team (except it will, but that's a separate topic), I mean specifically the price to pay to acquire one. From my point of view, one must either draft one or overpay to get one. In compiling this list it was really difficult to find many trades that dealt for a clear upgrade in the defense department, and that's because it doesn't happen often, and for good reason.
To Ottawa:
Morgan Rielly D 29 6300000 3 97 79 80 78 78 78 71 78 77 89 80 71 78 79 75 79
Roope Hintz C 27 4000000 2 80 75 75 75 77 77 75 78 78 80 99 67 75 75 76 78
To Minny:
Ottawa 1st 2024
Ottawa 1st 2025
Josh Williams RW 22 624019 1 75 77 75 74 75 74 81 77 76 70 90 48 55 75 76 73
Joshua Norris LW 24 1000000 2 76 71 77 72 70 72 68 73 75 76 75 52 75 73 70 73
David Savard D 33 3250000 1 37 71 67 73 75 75 77 75 75 73 61 67 75 70 75 75
Ottawa invests in now by upgrading over David Savard for Morgan Rielly. Yes there are other pieces, but we're not focused on them. The difference between Hintz and Williams is experience and top-tier elite faceoff for generational faceoff talent (if we're allowed to say such ridiculous things). It's pretty lateral, especially once considering Williams is on ELC. So the exchange ends up being 2 first round picks, one low and the other projected to be low, plus a young playmaking forward. Morgan Rielly if offense, does nothing poorly, would easily make most team's first pairing.

Yeah
Ottawa had Nathan Beaulieu as their 3rd pairing defender. Ottawa likes hitting so that may not be a fair marker, but here is a great example when two teams are perfect trade partners because Chicago sees Beaulieu as a top 4 defender. The cost to get that upgrade? A 3rd round and a hopeful prospect (5th round) to upgrade over a cheap physical defender. Nathan is ranked as an offensive journeyman defender - top 4 on lesser teams, 3rd pairing on better teams.

Miller is no Morgan Rielly, but he's the next best thing. Which as noted took two firsts and a youth to get. For Colin, two prospects of the same draft class, 20th and 50th overall respectively who Washington is 'hoping isn't good.' Let's analyze that for a second: the cost of getting upgraded now is possibly an equal or lesser player in the future, plus the next best thing you got that same draft. Whereas in the Rielly trade, where more was given, it's very unlikely Morgan is not the best player in that deal when all is said and done. So then, that falls in line with the rest of the consensus.

Or sometimes it's just the matter of swapping offense for defense. Some asterisks here though, Zadorov, a top 4 physical defender, isn't getting better and is retained on to $4.5M for 2 years (his prior contract). Kotkaniemi is just 23 and continuing to improve.

Had to move Butcher to get back under the cap even though he played really well for us, so I pick up some prospects and hope that I can replace him with a cheaper option in UFA.
Typically teams in cap trouble don't get a fair exchange in trade but because good D men are hard to come by they are still worth paying for. Also sadly there wasn't a whole lot of good D in UFA as I recall for probably the same reason.

Pretty self-explanatory. But let's go back a bit further in time because these are all from this past season and are upgrades by one tier, if that, because I would assume after 6 seasons most of us have learned the lesson.

I'll spare you the speculation because I made it: To upgrade over EJ to get a true number one defender I had to give up Nathan MacKinnon. Before I put him on the block no one was interested in gifting me a defender. The tradeoff was a downgrade at center for EJ, the other two were a wash for stylistic preferences. STL kept EJ, Parayko stayed in Colorado. MacK was actually moved again later to Pittsburgh. For a bunch of youth.
Point is, to get something good you gotta give something good. To get the best you got to give the best offer you can possibly give, and then some. Unless it's Connor McDavid and you're settling for mediocrity the morning after another generational talent was announced to be in the next draft.
