Since the real life All Star Game is this weekend, I figured it might be fun to name PTPHL All Star teams based on divisions just like they do in real life.
A few things to note:
-Every team will consist of 6 forwards, 3 defensemen and 2 goaltenders.
-All five teams in each division must be represented by at least one player.
-The maximum I'll take from one team will be three players.
-There are four teams in real life. We're doing six here. Smaller divisions as well.
-These are my opinion and really have no affect on anything other than just being a fun little exercise.
-These teams are based off of player performance and will differ from the actual teams chosen by the game in February.
Based off of performance as of 22.12.2023.
Atlantic Division
New Jersey, New York I, New York R, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
F - Alexis Lafreniere (PIT)
F - Auston Matthews (NJD)
F - Brayden Schenn (NJD)
F - Cole Caufield (NYR)
F - John Tavares (NYI)
F - Steven Stamkos (PIT)
D - Jamie Drysdale (PIT)
D - Jeremy Roy (NYR)
D - Kaiden Guhle (NJD)
G - Alexander Georgiev (NYR)
G - Carter Hart (PHI)
*My own bias aside, Evan Fitzpatrick and Torey Krug performed well enough in the Atlantic to make this team also but I can only take three, allowing Jeremy Roy to get a nod. Likewise, Murray would have made the goaltending spot for Pittsburgh as well had they not already had three in.
Northeast Division
Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto
F - Kaapo Kakko (BOS)
F - Kyle Connor (BOS)
F - Oliver Wahlstrom (TOR)
F - Ryan McLeod (MON)
F - Sam Reinhart (TOR)
F - Sonny Milano (OTT)
D - Braden Schneider (BOS)
D - Rasmus Ristolainen (BUF)
D - Wayne Difranco (OTT)
G - Frederik Andersen (MON)
G - Marcus Hogberg (OTT)
*Not alot of high performing defensemen to choose from. Difranco makes it as a rookie, Risto gets in because Buffalo needs a representative. Andersen sort of reps both Toronto and Montreal here this season. Wahlstrom beats out Marner for a second TOR forward.
Southeast Division
Carolina, Columbus, Florida, Tampa Bay, Washington
F - Andrei Svechnikov (CAR)
F - Brock Boeser (TBL)
F - Evgeni Svechnikov (CBS)
F - Patrik Laine (FLA)
F - Ryan Strome (FLA)
F - William Eklund (CBS)
D - Adam Boqvist (CAR)
D - John Carlson (CAR)
D - Noah Hanifin (TBL)
G - Andrei Vasilevski (FLA)
G - Hannah Montana (TBL)
*A case could have been made for another Tampa foward, namely Schwartz or Pacioretty, but they already have three reps, which opens the door for a guy like Eklund to get a nod. I struggled to choose a second goaltender. Nedeljkovic seemed an easy pick but a small sample size and Carolina already had three players named.
Central Division
Chicago, Detroit, Nashville, St. Louis, Winnipeg
F - Adam Foote (WPG)
F - Christian Dvorak (DET)
F - Nikita Kucherov (WPG)
F - Viktor Arvidsson (NAS)
F - Vladimir Tarasenko (CHI)
F - Vlastimil Kamas (STL)
D - Connor Murphy (STL)
D - Oliver Ekman-Larsson (DET)
D - Owen Power (CHI)
G - Taylor Gauthier (CHI)
G - Connor Hellebuyck (NAS)
*This was a pretty easy division to figure out aside from two spots. Hellebuyck isn't having the greatest year but sneaks in as the second goaltender. Finally, it was hard to find a deserving third defensemen, so the spot went to OEL.
Northwest Division
Calgary, Clorado, Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver
F - Alex Newhook (COL)
F - Alexander Wennberg (VAN)
F - Leon Draisaitl (EDM)
F - Mason Raymond (CAL)
F - Nikolaj Ehlers (COL)
F - Owen Tippett (MIN)
D - Bode Wilde (VAN)
D - Hamphus Lindholm (EDM)
D - John Klingberg (CAL)
G - Sergei Bobrovsky (CAL)
G - Olivier Rodrigue (COL)
*Wilde, Wennberg make it in due to Calgary and Colorado already having three. Raymond's excellent season gets recognized here.
Pacific Division
Anaheim, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Jose, Vegas
F - Alex Tuch (SJS)
F - Brett Howden (VGK)
F - Connor McDavid (DAL)
F - Kevin Labanc (DAL)
F - Kyle Turris (DAL)
F - Samuel Poulin (ANA)
D - Drew Doughty (LAK)
D - Jeremy Lauzon (VGK)
D - Victor Hedman (ANA)
G - Braden Holtby (LAK)
G - John Gibson (DAL)
*A couple of surprises here with players performing very well this year, namely Howden, Turris and Labanc, the latter two could probably be equated to playing alongside McDavid, though.
Which team do you think would win in a 3v3 tourney? Did I miss someone who should have made it?
