Flames Win 7 in a Row The Calgary Flames have continued their hot play as of later improving upon last weeks 4 in a row to now make it 7 straight wins for this team, the playoffs look to be well within reach and another division crown is on the team's horizon. The Flames made a blockbuster deal that seems to have shook this team properly, as both pieces have been making their presence's felt in Dahlin and Bobrovksy respectively. After Sergei's first slow start he has followed that up with 3 strong games, obviously leading the team to victory. The team has continued to give defender Adam Fox a chance to grow his game, playing around 18 minutes a night and on the PP is giving Adam every chance to develop into a top 4 defender for this team, but is not there yet. Time will tell, but Fox is playing as well as Noah Juulsen right now who currently is number 4 on the teams depth chart, Juulsen is young and grow, this will make Fox's job a lot harder. Another thing going against Fox is the growth of Cameron Whynot, although do not expect to see Whynot make any appearance until he is ready, the team does not need to rush their best prospect. The AHL team has continued to develop prospects for the NHL team, Aimo Pellopnaa, might be the next one as all indictions point to him being NHL ready, the team is happy to let him simmer down there and work on turning into a 4th line center for this team right now, but for now he is where he belongs, but an injury could change that. The other player who looks to finally be finding his game is Philip Kurashev, the 2019 1st rounder has struggled to jump over the AHL hurdle, but recent reports are pointing to him finding his game and perhaps developing into the game breaker this team thought they stole late in 2019.
Hope to see you at the Dome!

Flames Continue onto 10 Game Undefeated Streak The Calgary Flames have continued their hot play from December into the new year of 2022, as the Flames have continued to improve upon their 6 game winning streak improving their win streak to 10 games, which is damn impressive, the team has gone to overtime twice and found a way to win those games. The team has been rolling and surprisingly rookie, Lucas Raymond, is at the forefront of the teams scoring lead posting 18 goals, 14 assists, 32 points, and an outstanding +18, Lucas is amongst the league leaders in goals, given the fact that Skinner and Monahan are his line mates it is not a surprise that Raymond has been getting the opportunities. In the last three games that trio has combined for 11 points, which is solid for the role their are playing. Although the Flames do not rely on one line, but all 4 play key roles in the success of the team. The 3rd line has been a monster this season as the trio of Michael Ferland, Josh Ho-Sang, and Matthew Tkachuk have combined for 77 points this season as a line, as well as a whopping +42, the third line in Calgary is one that give oppositions nightmares matchup wise as the chemistry and strength of this line is hard to match. This current edition of the Calgary Flames might be the best one we have seen in a long time, and the results are pointing to that scenario, but time will be the ultimate decider in how this team can continue on. The Flames added a franchise defender in season, a veteran goalie who added to a dynamic duo with Jon Gillies, both have been play lights out, the team looks strong. With the trade deadline starting to loom it remains to be seen what additions the team looks to go for to help with their final push, as the standings start to spread out a bit more, more sellers will arise and the Flames might be ready to strike a deal.
Hope to see you at the Dome!

Flames Trade for Kopitar The Calgary Flames swung a big deal at the deadline adding future hall of fame talent in Anze Kopitar, from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for longtime Flames forward Hunter Shinkaruk, Aimo Pellonpaa (3rd round pick) and Gabriel Gagne who they added from Chicago this past offseason, but could not displace Craig Smith on the 4th line. The Flames needed to add a veteran presence to allow them a better chance to compete against the leagues top teams. The Flames on paper have everything they need to raise Lord Stanley, but the proof is in the pudding for this team, adding Kopitar is a good step. Kopitar is older at 34, but still has 2-3 solid seasons left in him as he begins the final stretch of his career. Anze is not showing any slowing with his age as he is boasting 28 goals this season, in line for another 60 point season. Kopitar will not see the same ice time he did in Minnesota, but he is being played on the top line right now, and we don't see him moving anywhere as he is a point per game so far in his Flames career, Anze might shuffle down to the second line, but that likely will not happen. The Flames will be focusing on the playoffs as they are only 10 games away from the dance, but once that comes to a draw it will be an interesting offseason as the team has to lockup Ho-Sang and Dahlin long term as the team looks to continue to build themselves into a dynasty, the roster is elite, but the championship is still missing, will it come this year? Flames Win 2022 Stanley Cup
The Calgary Flames have done it, yes, they have won it all. The road was not easy as the Flames took 6 games to eliminate provincial rival Edmonton Oilers, later to beat the Avalanche in 5 fairly easily, the western final was one we have seen before, but this time the Flames were able to beat the Jets and later of course the Penguins in the final. Sean Monahan was horse for the team picking up the Conn Smythe as well as Jon Gillies who played outstanding all year long and carried that into the post season as he was in goal for the final win. The Flames added Anze Kopitar and Rasmus Dahlin, who both are high impact pieces that made this team formidable in the post season. The Flames have already began their offseason activities by extending Josh Ho-Sang to a 4 years 5.75M contract to keep him in the fold long term, the big name to extend is Rasmus Dahlin who is going to command 9+ million long term, but the Flames have set up their cap with that in mind, should be an easy discussion for the team to finalize Dahlin's extension long term. Michael Ferland has fallen victim to the cap crunch, and sadly might one of two pieces that do not return, as Craig Smith will likely leave the team through Free Agency. Ferland was traded for the 23rd overall pick in 2022 Entry Draft, which is a good return for GM Backtrack as he tries to keep the cupboards stocked up, as they look to repeat as Cup champs.

Flames Extend Josh Ho-Sang The Calgary Flames made sure to lock up their 3rd line C long term, Calgary has made some savvy moves to keep their core intact, Josh Ho-Sang is apart of that as well as fellow mate Kieffer Bellows, who came back in the Hamilton deal. Looking back that was a heck of a move for both sides long term as Calgary got two excellent two way wingers and the Islanders got a stud on their backend. Back to the contract it is a 4 year deal worth 5.75 M per season, which is a nice raise off of the 3.5 bridge Ho-Sang previously signed with the Flames. Josh has progressed well and is a testament to patience as he was taken in the 2014 draft and now in 2022 he is making a large impact in every game. The Flames rely on him to play heavy minutes and Josh continues to provide a strong game and the GM is pleased. Now the big looming question is the Dahlin extension looming over GM Backtrack's head, there is also rumblings that the Flames might be looking to upgrade their defence, perhaps John Klingberg could be a target, time will tell. The Flames are a team looking to repeat and adding the Norris Trophy winner could be a step in the right direction... Hope to see you at the Dome! CALGMP: 24+4=28

Flames Pull Trigger on Deal with Oilers
The Calgary Flames have made their second deal in recent memory with the Edmonton Oilers as the previous deal was last offseason when the Flames added Klefbom, who later was traded for Rasmus Dahlin. Today's deal saw the Flames move their 1st round pick and Oliver Kylington for John Klingberg, it is a move for the future as the Flames get older in this deal and also lose a draft pick, but the team gets better right now. Klingberg is coming off a banner year with the Oiler's that saw him with the Norris Trophy, we know John has been hindered by his conditioning in the past, but that won't be a problem confirmed GM Backtrack. The Flames have built a culture that is hard to emulate as they continue year after year to be an elite team. The Flames will likely ice Klingberg alongside fellow swede Rasmus Dahlin as the pair seems to be a great match long term. The Flames will also look to see the impact that Cameron Whynot can have in his first full time season with the team, as given the fact the Flames need to work out an extension with Klingberg, it is likely there will be a few ELC making an appearance on the roster, just like Whynot. The Flames are in the midst of the NHL draft, we will see what they are able to get done in the near future here. Hope to see you at the Dome! CALGMP: 28+4=32

Flames Extend Rasmus Dahlin The Calgary Flames have signed the richest deal in their history as the Flames extended the Swedish stud to a 8 year, 72 million dollar contract as Rasmus will be a Flame for a long time. Rasmus won the Stanley Cup last year and ultimately was brought in by one of the bigger deals in franchise histroy as the Flames gave up, Juuso Valiamki, Jason Robertson, Jack Roslovic, 1st Round Pick, and Anton Olsson. It is a heck of a move for the Flames who now do not have a lot coming down the pipeline, but we will get to that later.
The Flames will now have to focus on signing fellow countryman John Klingberg, the reigning Norris winner is entering his 30 year old season, and the loss of the 2023 could hurt the Flames in the future, but right now they are focused on competing. Klingberg will likely sign in Calgary, play top PP minutes and log big minutes with Rasmus as the flames assemble one of the top pair's in the NHL. The draft is almost done now, and the team will continue to work on their contracts as they push forward to repeating.
Hope to see you at the Dome!

Calgary Flames Prospect Update Calgary Flames prospects going forward are not what you would refer to as a top end crop, but there is some good NHL talent in the system non the less, starting off with last years 10th overall pick, Cameron Whynot. Lets take a look at how they stack up. 1. Cameron Whynot (D) - Drafted 10th overall by the Calgary Flames, Whynot was considered the safest pick at that spot, Whynot had an alright year last year for the Stockton Heat and got in couple NHL games at the end of the year and was also a Black Ace for the Cup run there is a good chance it helps spur his development as Whynot has every tool to become a top 4, if not top pair defender in the PTPHL file, time will tell. 2. Petteri Holkeri (C/W) - Drafted 30th overall in 2022 NHL entry draft, at 6'5 Holkeri is a big man, who likely will be bringing his talent to Stockton of the AHL as the he transitions to the North American game, Holkeri will take a year to develop, but should be a physical 2 way force, who is able to chip in offensively, long term Holkeri is going to be a impact player for the Flames likely, this will likely mean an end to Mikeal Granlund's time as a Flame. 3. Viktor Pohorsky (D) - Drafted 42nd Overall in 2022, Pohorsky had a good year in Stockton as his game grew leaps and bounds, but he is still going to need more time before he impacts the NHL, Pohorsky projects to be a 2 way 4/5 type defender at best, but he is going to be a good piece for the Calgary Flames, as he continues to work on transitioning to the pro game. 4. Kiril Primakov (RW) - Drafted 87th Overall in 2020, Primakov is an unknown to a lot of common PTPHL fans, but he had an outstanding year in Stockton developing his game really well especially defensively, we know GM Backtrack traded Ferland for Clancy, so there is a great chance that Primakov gets a chance to be an everyday NHLer this season. 5. Steven Clancy (D) - Drafted 23rd Overall in 2022, Clancy is another big body at 6'4, Clancy is looking like Nikita Tryamkin's long term replacement, Clancy will never be an impact guy offensively, but there is a good chance he is more than capable of turning into a Michael Stone or Travis Hamonic type defender. All in all looking at the Flames prospects there is some really good NHL talent in the pipelines, there is no bluechippers outside of Cameron Whynot, but Holkeri is going to a beast for the team long term, and given the depth on defence, the team will likely be able to make deals from the backend to add another draft pick or improve the team. Calgary Flames Prospect Update #2 The last article took a look at the top 5 Calgary Flames prospects, but lets not forget about some of the more unknown guys, or guys that just quite have not put it all together yet. 1. Lias Andersson - 7th Overall 2017 - The New York Rangers made Lias a top 10 NHL pick back in 2017, but found himself on the outside looking in as the GM here sent a 2nd round pick away for his services. Lias is a smaller guy but brings an element of speed and 2 way hockey that fit the Flames really well, but the team thinks there is more there in the former top 10 pick, time will tell, but Lias will be getting an everyday shift. 2. Adam Fox - 66th Overall 2016 - The Flames took him a long time ago, and Adam finally made his NHL debute last year and played quite well, and was part of the cup winning roster for game 6 in Pittsburgh. Adam is a bit of a special talent, being a smaller high skilled guy allows him to succeed at the heighest level, but Adam can make a greater impact if he can find another gear in his development, at the age of 24 it seems unlikely, but Adam will be given a chance as the 6/7 defender on the Flames this upcoming season. 3. Philip Kurasehv - 26th Overall 2019 - Kurahev has had a quite unique development path as he sturggled transitioning to North America, and finally was able to come around a bit this past season, Kurashev is a force at the AHL level and has every chance to develop into a high impact NHL talent, but it has not happened yet, and may never. It will be a big year for Philip as the Flames look to see if there is another gear there. 4. Vyacheslav Revnik - 53rd Overall 2021 - Revnik was a 2nd rounder in this previous draft, the Russian had a tough time transitioning to North America with a couple tough injuries last season, it will be a better year for the young blueliner who looks to become a modern day shutdown defender for the Flames. 5. Adam Thiel - 67th Overalll 2019 - Adam is a wildcard, but will finally be making the transition to pro hockey, 2019 was an alright draft, we have seen other talents arise from the draft, could Thiel be a bit of a steal like Kiril Primakov the year prior? Time will tell. Hope to see you at the Dome! CALGMP: 40+4=44

Calgary Flames Draft Review Round #1 The Calgary Flames swung a deal with the Vancouver Canucks that saw them pick up a secondary 1st round pick in the NHL draft, at 23rd overall, lifelong Flame Michael Ferland is now calling the west coast home. The Flames made two selections in the draft at 23rd and 30th overall. The team has emphasized defence as a priority over the years, as the Flames stepped up at 23rd overall and took Steven Clancy, Clancy is a 6'4 big bodied blueliner who is going to make you pay, but he is not what you would call an offensive stalwart, but projects to a more offensive Nikita Tryamkin type defender. Nikita is in line for a raise next offseason, one the team likely will not be willing to pay, so one of Clancy, Revnik or Pohorsky will need to step up over the season and challenge Nikita.
The 30th overall pick is a name that Flames fans should get used to saying as he has every chance to become a fan favourite, the Flames took, Petteri Holkeri, from Finland the 6'5 center, plays a physical game, and looks for those big hits, especially on the forecheck. Holkeri is known for his presence and physical impact he can have on a game, but he is also more than capable of scoring as well, truly an impactful forechecking guy. Holkeri's floor looks like a top 9 forward, with a slight chance at becoming a 2nd line winger, time will tell, but expect Petteri to make his debute in North America this upcoming season.
Hope to see you at the Dome!

Flames Ink Lias Andersson, Trade Smith and Jankowski The Calgary Flames swung another trade prior to the UFA season as they sent a 2nd round pick to the New York Rangers, as they sent their 2nd round pick in exchange for the rights to Lias, who quickly inked a 2 year 3.5M dollar contract. (1.75/year) The Flames used their own pick, but recouped the asset in trading Jankowski to the Wild in exchange for a 2nd, other words it was Andersson for Jankowski, which is a favourable move for the Flames cap wise. The Flames also parted ways with Craig Smith, who was seeking a big raise, the Flames were able to pick up Vancouver's 3rd rounder in 2023 for the asset. All in all it looks like the Flames were able to recoup assets for guys like Ferland, Jankowski and Craig Smith who did not have a chance to play for the team next season. The other player the Flames have come to an agreement with is RFA Anthony Cirelli, who will have to come in and compete for a spot on the 4th line, this should be an exciting battle come camp between: Primakov, Cirelli and Andersson who are competing for two spots on the roster. Hope to see you at the Dome! CALGMP: 48+4=52

The UFA plan for Calgary What will the Flames due come July 1 here? Well lets take a look at how the Flames set up going into next season. The Calgary Flames right now have 13 forwards, 6 defenceman and 2 goalies under contract to start next season, with John Klingberg's contract still up in the air, the Flames have 7M in cap space, which includes an extra body up front as well as potentially an extra defender in one of Fox/Tryamkin. The Flames biggest UFA move will likely be extending John Klingberg who is coming off of a Norris season, and the Flames are really wanting him to be apart of their core long term. In our previous article we looked at some of the immideate changes that will be shown for the start of the 2022-2023 season, but there are a few players that will be looking to prove they belong long term. Guys like Owen Tippett, Mikael Granlund, Lucas Raymond, and Sean Monahan are in contract years, and will be looking to have big seasons, as next season the team could make some big changes, but no need to do that right now. Time will tell where the Flames go.
Hope to see you at the Dome!
